In 2021, the Geneva Centre initiated the Human Rights Recognition Awards to commemorate International Human Rights Day. This day is observed annually on 10 December to commemorate the adoption of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948.
The Human Rights Recognition Awards offers Three Awards, each of which is presented with a modest financial contribution, as well as an Award of Honour for exceptional contributions. Furthermore, it provides the recipients with a unique opportunity for collaboration, greater visibility, and professional growth.
Through a different theme every year, the awards recognize individuals who dedicate themselves to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Applicants may apply through public calls and by invitation, using the forms available on the Geneva Centre’s website.
The Human Rights Recognition Awards awardees are selected by an international jury of renowned experts with substantial experience in human rights and a former awardee based on the following criteria:
- Nominee’s work consistent with the year’s theme.
- Evidence-based proof that this work is beneficial to the local community.
- Active participation in affiliated initiatives and developed synergies.
- Balanced geographic and gender representation.
Annually, the Awards are presented online around on the 10th of December.
