The Geneva Centre will closely monitor the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC56), h0ld from 18 June to 12 July 2024 at Palais des Nations in Geneva.

During the 56 session, the Council considered thematic issues including the interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on health, education, migrants, trafficking, freedom of expression, extreme poverty, climate change, violence against women and girls, new and emerging technologies, peaceful assembly, among others.
Country-specific topics included interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and in Israel, Ukraine, Libya, Central African Republic, Syrian Arab Republic, Colombia, Sudan, Burundi, Venezuela, to name a few.
The panel discussions analyzed the human rights of women, under the themes of economic violence against women and girls, and human rights economy and women’s rights; the promotion of human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal, under the theme: Promoting inclusiveness in and through sports; and the technical cooperation and capacity-building, enhancing technical cooperation and capacity-building in the implementation of universal periodic review recommendations.
The President of the Human Rights Council appointed:
- Ms. Mai Sato (Japan), Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran;
- Ms. Lyra Jakuleviciene (Lithuania), Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises, member from Eastern European States
- Ms. Joana Lopes De Deus Pereira (Portugal), Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination, member from Western European and other States.
