UN HUMAN RIGHTS MECHANISMS

The Geneva Centre will closely monitor the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC54), held from 11 September to 13 October 2023 at Palais des Nations in Geneva.

During the 54 session, the Council will consider thematic issues including the interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on truth, justice and reparation, slavery, water and sanitation, unilateral coercive measures, rights of indigenous peoples, right to development, arbitrary detention, among others.

Country-specific topics include an interactive dialogue with the Office of the High Commission on Afghanistan, and an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation on the Russian Federation. An interactive dialogue with the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia will be also held. Other country specific interactive dialogues will concern the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, Nicaragua, Burundi, Syrian Arab Republic, Belarus, Sudan, Myanmar, Venezuela, South Sudan, Ukraine, CAR, Haiti, Somalia and Cambodia.

The panel discussions (5) will analyze the impact of unilateral coercive measures and overcompliance on the right to development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals; the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the Human Rights Council and that of its mechanisms; the Young people’s engagement with climate change and global environmental decision-making processes; the cyberbullying against children; and the impact of certain development projects on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, in particular the impact on indigenous women.
