Geneva Centre’s Human Rights Awareness Week 2024 Highlights Abu Dhabi Panel: “The Role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights”
11 December, Abu Dhabi, UAE – As part of the Geneva Centre’s Human Rights Awareness Week 2024, a significant joint panel discussion entitled “The Role of NHRIs in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights” was held in collaboration with the UAE’s NHRI.
This insightful panel explored the essential contributions of national institutions and non-governmental organizations in addressing complex human rights challenges. The panel opened with remarks from H.E. Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the UAE NHRI, and Dr. Umesh Palwankar, Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue. Both speakers provided an overview of their respective institutions, emphasizing their mission, guiding principles, and focus areas.
The discussion highlighted the vital collaboration between NHRIs and civil society organizations in advancing, promoting, and safeguarding human rights. H.E. Kruse and Dr. Palwankar underscored the interconnected roles these mechanisms play in preventing violations and fostering a culture of human rights.
An engaging Q&A session followed, featuring thought-provoking comments and inquiries from students of New York University Abu Dhabi and the Anwar Gargash Diplomacy Academy, showcasing their keen interest and commitment to human rights issues.
