The 49th session of the Universal Periodic Review (#UPR49) started on 28 April 2025 at United Nations Office in Geneva and will continue until 9 May 2025
Introducing a Brand-New UPR Monitoring and Reporting Initiative
On this occasion, the Geneva Centre implemented a brand-new Monitoring and Reporting Intiative for the review of Türkiye and Kuwait. The newly introduced reports feature an in-depth section dedicated to the presentation of the national report as delivered by the chief of the delegation of the State under review, followed by extensive insights into observations and replies offered by the members of the same delegation. A new section of the reports illustrates national measures appreciated by the recommending States, followed by an extensive section dedicated to recommendations offered to the State under review grouped, for ease of reference, by thematic issues. In closing, the report details the list of States that took the floor during the review.
About the Universal Periodic Review
The UPR is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The UPR is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council, which provides the opportunity for each State to illustrate the measures they have taken to enhance the full enjoyment of human rights in their countries and to effectively respond to emerging human rights challenges.
As a peer review, the UPR is designed to ensure equal treatment for every country during the assessment of their human rights records. The ultimate aim of this mechanism is to identify positive advacements as well as weaknesses in order to offer guidance towards the furtherance of human rights in a spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual cooperation, through the issuance of targeted recommendations and the sharing of best practices around the globe.
The UPR Working Group meetings are broadcast on UN Web TV available in the six official languages of the United Nations. For the sake of multilingualism and greater accessibility, the Geneva Centre warmly encourages States under review to provide interpretation into their main national language(s) during the review and to widely disseminate the outcome of their review translated into their national language(s).
